Natasha Romanoff's life has helped a lot. A special
school, civil service in the Russian power structure. The Avengers,
finally. Death in the finale for the common good. But the action of
her solo film begins long before all these misadventures: in the courtyard of
the mid-90s, on the screen is the idyllic state of Ohio. Here the
childhood of the future extra-class killer passed quietly, until one day, after
returning from work, dad began to rush the family to collect.
The Romanovs did not manage to go far. Natasha and
her younger sister Lena (her adult version is played by Florence Pugh ) fell into the tenacious clutches of
the Russian special services and ended up in the Black Widows program. What
training is and what further work is, they will colorfully and succinctly show
in the opening credits: explosions all over the world, blows with batons and
well-aimed shots, marching schoolgirls, the official chronicle with Boris
Nikolaevich and Vladimir Vladimirovich, in which the insidious gray cardinal is
pasted Drakes ( Ray Winston ). The kids are
crying, and a languid cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" plays in the
background. For some, all this video nostalgia will tune in an elegiac
mood, while for others it will seem mournful vulgarity. How the next two
hours of this not boring, but also not the most dynamic Marvel film will pass
depends on the mood.
The Widow made a career out of low-profile indie
films about girls in trouble, and here she is also more interested in the story
of family reunification and how Natasha reimagines the past, rather than
fights. At the pig farm in the Leningrad Region, where the heroes fly by
helicopter with the print "Nightingale Air" (they laugh together in
the hall), the most precious and simply the best moments of the film pass. Rachel Weise (Melina Vostokova, mother of
Natasha and Elena) forbids stooping, Florence Pugh drinks vodka, David Harbour (The Red Guardian) barely buttons
up his Soviet superhero costume, Scarlett Johnsson is gloomily perplexed, a
trained pig is running underfoot. Viewers from Russia will be surprised at
a lot, some will even remember the film Sergei Bodrov Jr. "Sister”. This cranberry is nicely diluted with sweet: here they hug more
and hold back tears than fight and argue about geopolitics. In general,
Russians also love their children, as Sting sang at one of the rounds of the
Cold War.
The only pity is that, despite all the efforts of
first-class actresses and actors, their heroes seem to be real people only in
very rare moments. It is noticeable that Scarlett Johansson herself was
already rather bored with this role. But "Black Widow" can be
perceived not only as a funeral monument to Natasha but also as a solo album of
another Widow - her sister Elena Belova. Florence Pugh, who plays her -
snorting, grunting, raising her eyebrows frowningly, holding back tears, and
beating off all the blows of fate with passive-aggressive sarcasm - is
responsible for all the little living things in this film. Her phlegmatic
charm keeps the film afloat, distinguishing it from the general perky
intonation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
